TLH Transformation Partner, Sally Storey, shares her thoughts on the value of TLH 1:1 FUEL.
What makes you decide to employ a professional coach? The reasons will be different for everyone and sometimes it is simply because you were given one by your organisation as part of your development journey. For me, it was mainly when I had a specific problem I needed to solve. I have had some wonderful coaches over the years – they didn’t need to understand my day-to-day, but they did help me make sense of difficult situations and guide me through some challenging times.
But the coach/coachee relationship often came to an end when the specific issue was managed. I couldn’t turn to them for mentorship or advice as they hadn’t lived in a similar world with similar experiences. Not that I am advocating that we should only have one person to turn to, I am a fan of the 70/20/10 model of development where 70% comes from on-the-job learning; 20% from developmental relationships; and 10% from coursework and training. We should always seek to network and to build strong developmental relationships from diverse people, but the ongoing relationship with a person who is contracted to be there for us can be both supportive and empowering. Having a session in the diary forces us to stop, to breathe and to think about ourselves and those around us. Some people are very good at ongoing self-reflection, other people need to be actively encouraged to create a space to think, to engage, to offload, to challenge themselves, to dream. We often need different things in the moment and, for me, that is why the TLH 1:1 FUEL model is so valuable.
